HOGG’S ON THE ROPES

- By ADAM LANIGAN

JONATHAN HOGG admits that Huddersfield’s Premier League misery this season has been heartbreaking.

Hogg feels like a boxer who has taken too many punches.

The Terriers are bottom of the table, a massive 14 points from safety, after picking up just two wins from their 26 games.

Midfielder Hogg was there every step of the way in the previous two seasons as they defied logic to first get up and then stay up.

But it has all gone sour this year and Huddersfield need something incredible to escape the Premier League drop.

Miracle worker David Wagner left in January and new manager Jan Siewert has suffered three straight defeats.

“This has been heartbreaking,” said Hogg. “It is so hard to take. You train every day and go into a fight but you can’t win and you get battered every time.

“The performances have been brilliant but sometimes we have not had the rub of the green.

“The penalty decision away at Cardiff was huge. That could have turned our season. After that David went and Jan has come in and changed things but it takes weeks to get used to something new after three years with David and his style of play.”

Huddersfield travel to Newcastle today in the first of three games in eight days, with Wolves at home on Tuesday and a trip to Brighton next Saturday.

With Newcastle also desperate for points, Hogg wants to use that to their advantage.

He said: “St James’ is one of those places where if you keep the home side quiet the fans can turn within half an hour.

“If we can keep possession and the home fans see they are not at it, that is something we can use to our advantage.

“In this league it only takes one win to get things to click. Then we can start believing.

“It has been hard this year because we have not had many wins.

“We have always been on the back foot. We need to change that and get on the front foot.”
