Jail girl is home

A GIRL born in prison in Pakistan to a British woman jailed for smuggling £3.2million of heroin has arrived in the UK.

Six-year-old Malaika had spent her whole life behind bars in Rawalpindi with her mum Khadija Shah.

Shah, from Birmingham, was jailed for life in 2014.

Her mother had said that she believed traffickers took advantage of her daughter – a “vulnerable woman” who was heavily pregnant at the time.

Malaika is thought to have been brought to the UK after efforts by the Foreign Office.

A spokesman said: “Our staff continue to assist a British woman jailed in Pakistan.”

STORM Freya battered Britain overnight as a 500-mile weather bomb unleashed 80mph hurricane-force winds.

The Met Office said the worst spring storm for three years meant there was a continuing “danger to life” until 6am this morning from toppling trees, flying debris and 50-foot waves.

Forecasters warned of travel carnage with huge waves battering the UK coast, perilous driving conditions and power cuts bringing misery to some parts.

RAC spokesman Simon Williams urged drivers to take extra care, warning: “It’s the worst possible time for Freya to hit, due to the Monday morning rush hour, risking accidents from motorists hitting fallen trees and branches.” Gusts of 80mph were forecast yesterday evening into today, with the west and north worst hit but with 60mph gusts also due elsewhere.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “March is roaring in like a lion. We’ve been spoilt by record winter heat, but now it’s payback time.”

Met Office forecaster Emma Smith added: “Freya is bringing a real change after the warmest February on record.

“Be prepared for problems with travel including delayed trains, planes and road journeys, and the risk of coastal and river flooding in the south-west.

“Wind gusts of up to 80mph are expected, with a low chance of over 80mph, with the strongest winds moving from the south-west on Sunday to the north into Monday, and even 50-60mph gusts on southeast coasts.

“Snow is a risk early Monday on the Peak District, Pennines, and hills in Wales and Scotland.”
