Fury at failing railway payouts

-

TOP EARNER: Haines NEARLY 1,000 staff at Network Rail earn more than £100,000 a year – while providing the worst rail service for 20 years.

Despite non-stop delays and cancellations, 963 Network Rail staff boast paypackets of £100,000 and 131 rake in more than £150,000.

The bumper wages are made up of salaries, bonuses, pension contributions, overtime and other allowances.

The top earner is chief executive Andrew Haines, who receives £588,000.

The body’s chairman Peter Hendy takes home at least £375,000.

Sixty-one members of staff received a bonus of more than £30,000 and two took home six-figure bonuses.

Despite the huge outlays, the number of delays and cancellations on the railway is the highest since 2001.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “Pay is always a controversial subject for a public body.”

Tory MP Grant Shapps said: “Having suffered the railway year from hell, commuters will be stunned at employees raking in six-figure earnings.”
