Time to step up – Kane

- By JOHN CROSS

HARSH LESSONS: Kane HARRY KANE admits Tottenham haven’t won a trophy under Mauricio Pochettino as they have crumbled under pressure.

Kane insists Spurs will never have a better chance of reaching a Champions League quarter-final tomorrow when they go to Borussia Dortmund with a three-goal first leg lead.

But the England captain warned they must beat Dortmund and use it as a turning point to start winning silverware, after another nightmare week which saw them crash out of the Premier League title race by winning just one point from three games.

The striker said: “When the pressure is on and we need to step up, we need to find a way to get it done.

“We haven’t done that in recent years, we haven’t done it this week and that will be the difference. That is the turning point that we need to try and achieve.

“The most important thing is to get through on Tuesday and bit by bit if we beat the big teams it gives you a bit more belief.

“It’s not going to be easy but it’s down to us to put a performance in and we will never have a better chance to get to a quarter-final.

“We went out at this stage last year so I think it is important we get to the quarter-final to show we are improving.

“The league is difficult, year by year teams are getting better, so it is important that we try and get better ourselves.”

Spurs hope to have Harry Winks fit while Eric Dier is a doubt with tonsillitis.

Boss Pochettino is ready to make changes to make sure they do not slip up in Dortmund after going out to Juventus at the same stage last year, having blown a great chance to go through.

He warned last week that it could take up to 10 years to turn Tottenham into serial winners.

They last won a trophy in 2008 with the League Cup.

Kane admits they are still some way behind Europe’s elite but added: “We have shown in certain games like this year and last year against Real Madrid and Barcelona that we can beat big teams.

“I don’t think it’s far away but I think what the gaffer was saying was it’s not a guarantee that if you improve you are still going to win things.

“We have got to a stage in the last four or five years where we have maybe done more than we expected as a club but it means that we have to do even more.”
