- ® by ROBIN COTTLE

KEITH Flint was born in Redbridge, east London, on September 17, 1969.

He moved to Chelmsford, Essex, as a child before heading to nearby Braintree after leaving school.

This is where he met DJ Liam Howlett at local rave club The Barn in the late 1980s.

The pair formed The Prodigy along with pal Leeroy Thornhill.

They had their first gig in Dalston, east London, and released dance track Charly in August 1991. Will Hodgkinson, rock critic for The Times, said Flint personified the British rave culture of the early 1990s.

Keith was initially the band’s dancer but featured as the vocalist on Firestarter in 1996.

Firestarter and then Breathe both reached No1 in the UK that year and another 12 singles reached the top 20.

The Prodigy were the first dance group to headline Glastonbury and released seven studio albums. Keith dated former model Gail Porter from 1999 to 2000 and later married Japanese DJ Mayumi Kai in 2006.

Keith also had a huge passion for motorbikes and in 2014 he bought and renovated The Leather Bottle pub in Pleshey, Essex, before parting company with the boozer in 2017.

Local Les Taylor said: “He was a larger-than-life character, he was not up himself at all, very friendly, liked to chat, did a lot to the pub.”
