Mother blows fund for sick lad

-

A MUM of a six-year-old boy who died from cancer gambled away £100,000 donated for his treatment, a court heard.

Stacey Worsley admitted defrauding a fund set up to try to save her son Toby Nye after he was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma in 2017.

His family launched an appeal to raise £200,0000 for therapy.

The cash target was achieved with the support of Toby’s favourite football club, Leeds United. Players and staff donated a day’s salary and fans also gave.

Early testing after treatment showed Toby’s bone marrow was clear of cancer. But he was then diagnosed with a brain tumour and died two months ago.

Worsley, 32, pleaded guilty to fraud at Leeds Crown Court. Sentencing was adjourned to March 29.

Police said betting firms had returned the cash Worsley had gambled, some of which would be returned to donors and the rest donated to charity.

The crime did not affect Toby’s treatment.

Yesterday Worsley’s sister Becky said she was trying to win more money for her son’s therapy.

Becky wrote on Facebook: “She honestly believed she could win the money we needed for his treatment. This was before Leeds were on board. She was blinded by panic.”
