UK hit by new storm warning

BRITAIN is set to be battered by floods, strong winds, torrential rain and thunder today as winter kicks in again.

A yellow weather warning was issued last night for Wales and south-west England.

The storms are expected to spark travel chaos with tough driving conditions and train delays. And the deluge could leave homes, businesses and roads flooded in parts of Devon and Cornwall and south Wales.

The miserable weather comes after Brits enjoyed record-breaking temperatures in February.

The severe weather comes in the wake of Storm Freya, which battered the UK with torrential rain and 80mph winds over the weekend.

“Rain will affect much of south Wales and southwest England into Wednesday morning then clear,” the Met Office said.

“Up to 30mm of rain is likely to fall over the higher ground of south Wales and south-west England, such as the Brecon Beacons and Dartmoor.”

Temperatures have dropped into the single figures with snow at risk of falling in northern England and Scotland.

By the weekend a large area of low pressure could unleash torrential rain and strong winds on Saturday.

BBC meteorologist Simon King said: “As we go through this week it’s going to stay fairly unsettled.”

Similar conditions are likely into next week but some long-range experts predict warmer than normal conditions across the UK in the run-up to summer.

Todd Crawford, chief meteorologist with The Weather Company, said temperatures will hover above normal through March, April and May.
