FOOTBALL star Ian Rush has become engaged to a woman 22 years his junior.

The Liverpool icon, 57, popped the question to Irish singer Carol Anthony two weeks ago after more than five years of dating.

He has been in a relationship with the 35-year-old brunette since 2013, and has now made it official.

The pair hooked up just one year after he split up with his partner of 25 years Tracy.

Revealing her excitement, Carol said: “We’ve been speaking about it for a long time.

“We don’t feel any different as we always knew we would be together for the long haul.

“When we travel together, Ian always introduces me as his wife.

“Two weeks ago, I corrected him and said, ‘Ian, I’m not your wife.’

“He said, ‘Yes, but I want you to be. That is, if you want to be?’”

The singer then said: “There’s nothing in this world that would make me happier.”

She also revealed that she had grown up watching Liverpool’s all-time top scorer on the pitch, and had no issue with the difference in age.

The loved-up model explained: “I have always been a Liverpool fan.

“I watched Ian play on TV when I was younger.

“But I don’t see an age gap. I did once or twice when we first got together but I don’t any more.

“I’m trying to stop my ageing

He said: “When you’re top, everyone wants to beat you, but when you’re second, I think Liverpool prefer to be in that position.

“I am very confident, to tell you the truth.

“If you don’t beat Chelsea and Tottenham at home, maybe you don’t deserve to win the title, but we’ve got home support in those games and the other games are all winnable.”
