SOAP STAR’S SELF-DEFENCE

CORONATION Street star Simon Gregson has taken up martial arts following a recent attack on his wife.

The soap legend was left “furious” after his other half Emma Gleave was punched in the face by a stranger on a night out last week.

The actor, who plays pub landlord Steve McDonald in the ITV show, signed up for self-defence classes in a bid to protect him and his family.

Emma was attacked in a random assault after stepping in to protect her brother – who suffers from learning difficulties – from a violent and abusive group of thugs.

It is thought the classes, which are held near to Simon’s home in Cheshire, teach attendees the basic skills of how to handle themselves in dangerous situations and self-defence skills.

Dad-of-three Simon said: “I’ve started with the martial arts.

“It’s a bit hard as I’m old-ish and fat, but it’s worth it.”

Simon has played the popular Corrie character since 1989 and has been married to his wife for eight years.

The 44-year-old has taken this drastic step to protect his family after admitting he would “love” to get his hands on Emma’s attacker.

A source said: “What sort of bloke punches a woman? Simon was furious.

“If he got his hands on this bloke, God knows what would happen.

“But his concern is for Emma.”

The small-screen star also hinted that the horrific incident, which left Emma with a broken nose, has made him consider quitting UK city life and instead opting to open his own safari or zoo.

Simon added: “Animals are so much nicer than people.

“If anyone has a safari park and needs a live-in family, we’re in.

“All is well with the world when you’re with animals.” DAILY STAR, Tuesday, March 19, 2019 THE ‘FAT AND THE FURIOUS’: Simon is training PARTNERS IN CRIME: The star with wife Emma
