‘Oldest’ tree axe blunder
A TREE surgeon chopped down one of Britain’s oldest giant redwoods “by mistake” – 176 years after it was planted.
Contractor Arwyn Morgan, 50, felled the 90ft tree dating back to 1842 to make way for new houses.
Council tree officer Alan Webster told Swansea magistrates the redwood was “irreplaceable”.
Morgan pleaded guilty to contravening a tree preservation order. He will be sentenced next month. ★
