Call to ban troll abuse

THE football world last night slammed social media companies after Paul Pogba was bombarded with racist abuse after missing a penalty.

His Manchester United team-mate Harry Maguire called on internet firms to ban “pathetic trolls”.

And England Women’s coach Phil Neville called on Brits to boycott social media altogether.

Defender Maguire, 26, demanded social media websites verify users with passports and driving licences.

French midfielder Pogba came under attack from so-called fans after missing a crucial penalty against Wolves on Monday night.

Three Lions star Maguire said: “Disgusting. Social media need to do something about it... Every account that is opened should be verified by a passport/driving licence.

“Stop these pathetic trolls making numerous accounts to abuse people. @Twitter @instagram.”

Speaking at a press conference ahead of England Women’s match against Belgium next week, former United player Neville said it was time for the football community to send a “powerful message”.

He said: “I’ve lost total faith in whoever runs these social media departments, so I just wonder whether now as a football community, in terms of really sending a powerful message, is: come off social media.” Another United player, striker Marcus Rashford, expressed support for his team-mate.

He said: “Manchester United is a family. Paul Pogba is a huge part of that family. You attack him you attack us all.” The club said that it is “working to identify” those responsible for the abuse.

Twitter said last night it has suspended a number of accounts over the abuse.
