Shock at attack on Gareth

X FACTOR winner Steve Brookstein slammed Gareth Thomas in a vile rant by claiming the rugby hero’s HIV diagnosis is a drag on our Health Service.

The Wales legend, 45, revealed he had been living with the disease after he was threatened by blackmailers who said they would spill his secret.

Showbiz and sports stars swiftly backed the ex-British and Irish Lions captain, with Princes William and Harry both praising his courage.

But pop flop Brookstein, who was dropped by Simon Cowell’s label 12 weeks after his first album went to No1, compared those with HIV to smokers and the overweight, calling them an “avoidable burden” on the NHS.

He said: “The hypocrisy of gay men discussing HIV is astonishing. They don’t like HIV being compared to obesity or smoking.

“Yes it is unfortunate and treatable but so is obesity and smoking. I don’t give a damn what he does in his private life. I do, however, think we should treat HIV the same way we treat smoking, obesity and drinking.

Waste

“It is a public health issue. We need to help but also educate.”

After the 2004 X Factor winner’s followers expressed shock, he said: “Tired of real camp guys stepping to me with their selfrighteous bulls***. Don’t waste our time. Run along.”

One fan replied: “I’d love to know if you know the circumstances under which Gareth actually contracted HIV? Was it a choice? Like putting food and fags in your mouth are?

“I highly f***ing doubt it.” Another slammed: “Its a disease you can get even while taking all precautions. Obesity and smoking are ppl failing to control themselves, over and over again. Hardly the same you moron.”

As Brookstein ranted on social media, Gareth completed the Ironman Wales race, and hugged husband Stephen at the finish.
