A THOMAS Cook worker discovered she had lost her job by reading Facebook.

Former cabin crew member Louise Rudkin, 25, from Swindon, said: “There was a lot of speculation but we didn’t listen to it because we thought our jobs were safe.” DREAM trips to meet Santa in Lapland have been scrapped due to Thomas Cook’s collapse – ruining Christmas for hundreds of families.

Children’s charities granting wishes for kids living with serious illness have also been hit.

The company played a major role in taking 286,000 Britons to see Father Christmas and his elves last year.

Midlands-based When You Wish Upon A Star’s trip for youngsters suffering from cancer is under threat. General manager Karen Martt said: “If we don’t go, it will be the first time in 29 years but it is all out of our control.

Fuming

“We only have about three weeks to get it all sorted. The trips are in real jeopardy.”

One mother tweeted: “Not sure how I will break this to my little man. Not going to Lapland to see Santa.” Another added: “Fuming 4 grand down I’ve got to try claim back from insurance – way too late to find a replacement now.”

But Santa’s village in Rovaniemi, Lapland, will soon be ready for the Christmas season. Sanna Karkkainen, of Visit Rovaniemi, said: “British tourists have always been the first arrivals to start the season.”

The Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee last night announced the launch of an inquiry into Thomas Cook. It is looking at executive pay, accounting practices and auditors.
