Trip’s the
The Bonham, Edinburgh
THE BACKGROUND
Nestled inconspicuously among the rows of Georgian townhouses that populate Edinburgh’s New Town, the Bonham is a quietly classy affair.
Dating from 1872, the buildings which now make up the hotel were originally occupied by well-to-do families.
The Bonham opened in 1998 and quickly established itself as one of the city’s premier boutique hotels.
THE PROPERTY
A recent refurbishment has brought the Bonham’s interior bang up to date while maintaining an air of conservative cool.
THE ROOM
Our generously proportioned superior double room on the third floor enjoyed pleasant views over Drumsheugh Gardens and beyond towards the city.
THE FOOD
With its chandeliers, plush velvet seats, and wood panelled walls, the dining room of No35 at The Bonham maintains the hotel’s “period with a luxurious modern twist” vibe.
Head chef Marco Nobrega’s focus on locally sourced ingredients was very much in evidence, with a handful of chorizo slices perfectly complementing my North Atlantic cod main course (£17). Between us my dining partner and I also enjoyed a red pepper and goats cheese bites starter (£4), Innis and Gunn shallot tart tatin (£7) and Free Range Chicken Ballotine (£18).
THE SIGHTS
The hotel’s Concierge Corner offers a bitesized guide to what’s on in the city and, being Edinburgh, there’s no shortage of options. Think castle, Scottish Parliament, Arthur’s Seat (a must-do mini hill walk opposite Holyrood Palace) and National Museum of Scotland (unmissable!).
THE BILL
Double room from £149 bed and breakfast. thebonham.com
