Brendan fears Andy air raid

- ■ by DAVE ARMITAGE

LEICESTER boss Brendan Rodgers has warned his side to beware a flying visit from Andy Carroll.

The pair had a bitter farewell when the big striker’s Liverpool career was brought to a close.

Carroll will be sitting on the bench for Newcastle at Leicester tomorrow desperate to put one over his former Kop boss.

But Rodgers (inset) says he doesn’t need anyone to tell him about the dangers the injury-prone striker poses.

Rodgers said: “He’s a fantastic player and he’s nearly unplayable in the air.

“He’s actually very good with his feet as well. He’s a talented player and one we have to be aware of. With Andy it’s just about if he can stay fit.”

It was Rodgers who oversaw Carroll’s departure from Anfield two years after Kenny Dalglish had signed him for £35m.

He was loaned out to West Ham before a permanent deal was brokered for £15m after just 44 appearances for Liverpool. Carroll, who rejoined hometown club Newcastle on a free at the start of the season, came on as sub against Brighton last weekend but is still trying to get fully fit after a long-term ankle injury.

Rodgers added: “When I went to Liverpool, he hadn’t been playing regularly and the conversation was that he’d be better going out and playing. That was how it was.

“Hopefully he can get back to playing regularly because if he’s fit and playing he’s a real danger.”

Leicester sit third in the table but may have to face Newcastle without star midfielder James Maddison who is trying to shrug off an ankle injury.

Rodgers said: “We will have to see but he’s obviously a doubt.

“He’s putting some weight on it now but it is questionable whether he will play. We’ll give him every chance.

“You don’t want to risk anything with a player of that importance.”
