Pinatas take a beating

- ■ by KATE NELSON

PARTY pinatas have been banned by killjoys who claim they are destroying the planet.

Park bosses have outlawed the papier-mache party games for causing piles of litter.

The Mexican effigies, which are packed with sweets and beaten down from trees in a kids’ blindfold game at birthday bashes, have become increasingly popular in recent years.

Celebrities including TV host Holly Willoughby, actresses Emma Watson and Salma Hayek and pop star Miley Cyrus have joined in the fun.

But while pinatas in the shape of everything from donkeys to Donald Trump are entertaining revellers, anti-litter groups and park staff are not amused.

Myatt’s Fields Park, run by volunteers in Lambeth, south London, is thought to be the first to ban them.

Park spokesman Eliza Merchan said: “We have had a growing problem with these very trendy pinatas leaving colourful bits of paper, sweet wrappers and bits of plastic in the park.” ■

BRITAIN’S bad weather continued to rage last night with the country under 203 flood alerts.

Rivers burst their banks and roads were submerged under several feet of water. ■

Almost all of the UK will be under a yellow weather warning for heavy rain today.

The Met Office confirmed the savage conditions are far from over.

A spokesman said floodwater would bring a chance of danger to life.

Hurricane Lorenzo is hurtling towards the UK and is set to arrive on our shores some time on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a driver was taken to hospital and the motorway closed in both directions for four hours after this horrifying accident. ■

Police shared the image of the mangled car to warn drivers after eight-mile long traffic jams formed.

The vehicle was wrapped around a lamppost on the central reservation on the M62 at junction 21 near Rochdale, Gtr Manchester.
