Pinatas take a beating
PARTY pinatas have been banned by killjoys who claim they are destroying the planet.
Park bosses have outlawed the papier-mache party games for causing piles of litter.
The Mexican effigies, which are packed with sweets and beaten down from trees in a kids’ blindfold game at birthday bashes, have become increasingly popular in recent years.
Celebrities including TV host Holly Willoughby, actresses Emma Watson and Salma Hayek and pop star Miley Cyrus have joined in the fun.
But while pinatas in the shape of everything from donkeys to Donald Trump are entertaining revellers, anti-litter groups and park staff are not amused.
Myatt’s Fields Park, run by volunteers in Lambeth, south London, is thought to be the first to ban them.
Park spokesman Eliza Merchan said: “We have had a growing problem with these very trendy pinatas leaving colourful bits of paper, sweet wrappers and bits of plastic in the park.” ■
