KOP STAR’S IN IT TO WIJN IT

- ■ by CHRIS McKENNA

GINI WIJNALDUM claims Liverpool cannot afford to bask in former glories tomorrow.

The Reds return to Anfield for the first time in the Champions League since being crowned kings of Europe last season.

Their last European game on home soil was an epic 4-0 win in the semi-final to beat Barcelona.

But Wijnaldum, who scored twice against Barca to knock them out 4-3 on aggregate, says Jurgen Klopp’s men must look to the future to get their campaign back on track against Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg.

Liverpool lost the opening Group E game of their title defence against Italian club Napoli a fortnight ago.

And Wijnaldum (right) said: “What happened in the past is always in the past.

“We created great memories for ourselves but it is not something we should think about. Of course it gives us confidence if you are in a situation like that but it is a totally different Champions League campaign.

“It is different games, different situations, different teams. We just have to make sure we are ready and not think about last season.

“That is a great memory but we have to look forward to making it even greater and reach the final again.

“We must not be looking back but looking forward.”

Liverpool have been on the road for their last four games and Kop midfielder Wijnaldum, 28, added: “I didn’t know it was four away games, us players must be busy.

“We just see the fixture and think, ‘We have to play there.’

“It would be nice to get the first win.

“We all know how Champions League nights are so we will look forward to that.”
