Tammy is ready to roar for Lions

- ■ by JEREMY CROSS

TAMMY ABRAHAM is poised to earn a recall to Gareth Southgate’s England squad and dash Nigeria’s hopes of poaching him.

The Chelsea striker is set to accept the call-up in a move that will see him seal his international future with the Three Lions.

Southgate names his squad today for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic next Friday and Bulgaria the following Monday – and Abraham is expected to be included.

The Super Eagles have been attempting to convince him to switch his allegiance, despite the fact he has already won senior England caps in friendlies against Germany and Brazil.

Abraham (inset above), who was 22 yesterday, is understood to want to play for England and would answer the call from Southgate.

He qualifies for Nigeria through his dad, who also happens to be close childhood friends with the president of the Nigerian FA Amaju Pinnick.

But if Abraham makes an appearance against either the Czechs or Bulgaria he would then be committed to the Three Lions for the rest of his international career because both games are qualifiers.

Abraham has been in impressive form this season after returning to the Blues following a season-long loan with Aston Villa.

He has scored seven goals in the Premier League and is the highest scoring Englishman in the top flight. Southgate picked Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Callum Wilson as his strikers in his last squad. But when asked about Abraham during the last international break he made it clear he was still firmly in his plans.

Manchester United forward Rashford is struggling to regain full fitness following a recent groin problem.

Southgate will also check on Leicester’s James Maddison, who missed last weekend’s win over Newcastle with an ankle injury, but is expected to be fit.

Plus, the England boss is keeping tabs on Tottenham’s Dele Alli but the midfielder could still miss out despite starting against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
