Rabbi ready to thrive like Jadon

- ■ by JAMES NURSEY

RABBI MATONDO aims to emulate Jadon Sancho by starring in the Bundesliga and establishing himself on the international stage.

Sancho, 19, has excelled with Borussia Dortmund since leaving Manchester City in August 2017 for £8m.

He has scored 18 goals in 66 games and broken into the England side.

Matondo (below) left City for Schalke in January for £9.6m and scored hiss first goal last month in the

3-1 win at RB Leipzig.

Now he wants to thrive with Ryanan Giggs’ Wales sideid and is aiming to win his fourth cap in tomorrow’s Euro 2020 qualifier in Slovakia.

Matondo, 19, said: “If I can do as well as Jadon has done then I will be really happy.

“He is a great player – I have always known how good he can be since being at Manchester City with him and hopefully he can help me as well.

“I have always watched Jadon, even when we were young.

“He didn’t make me move to Germany but of course he is doing so well there and when it came around I thought, ‘Why not?’

“It was quite an easy decision to make.”

Matondo never played a senior game for City but has made two starts and seven sub aappearances for Schalke.

He added:

“I believe in myself but at Manchester City C it is tough to as all the players are top players. l

“It was more that I had the opportunity to go and play first-team football and I didn’t have that at Manchester City.

“I always thought: you will be playing at a good level when you are 17, 18, 19. That’s what I am doing at the moment and hopefully I can keep improving.”
