SUMFINK STUPID Daft new words in top dictionary
SUMFINK and whatevs are just two of the wacky words that have made it into the Oxford English Dictionary.
Whatevs is defined as “used in response to a question or statement to indicate that the speaker is disinclined to engage with, or is indifferent to the matter”.
The dictionary’s annual update also has words from Star Wars, starring Mark Hamill, inset, such as The Force and Jedi mind trick. And in a nod to US president Donald Trump, fake news is also being added. But on social media in Oxford, one resident, calling themselves “1nails”, posted: “I spent more than a lot of my time at school learning to speak English. The English dictionary was like the bible. Now I despair the way people talk nowadays.”
Dave Paxton wrote: “Well, it’s the simplest solution. If you can’t maintain the level of education in this country, you might as well lower the standards.”
Other new additions to the dictionary include sumfin, Jafaican, (a non-Jamaican person who adopts or identifies with aspects of Jamaican culture), and omnishambles (a situation that is comprehensively mismanaged).
Simples (used immediately after a statement giving a solution to a problem to indicate that something is very simple or straightforward to do) and cocky (short for a cockroach) are also in. APPRENTICE mentor Karren Brady’s daughter Sophia Peschisolido is fast becoming a star in her own right.
