I KIDNAPPED STIFF RICHARD

Bowls club wants star for the bar

- By ANTONY THROWER

CHEEKY Jeffrey Marraway stole a cutout of Sir Cliff Richard shutting an airport – for his bowls club bar.

THE masterminds behind the theft of a cardboard cutout of Sir Cliff Richard were last night revealed as a bowls club. Passengers on a flight to the UK from Faro in Portugal were told all planes were grounded until the life-sized figure was returned.

So Jeffrey Marraway calmly stood up, removed Sir Cliff from the overhead locker and walked up to the cockpit.

Jeffrey, 59, was on his way home with the St Lawrence Bowls Team from Ramsgate, Kent.

They decided to nick the cutout for their bar at the club because one of their members looks like the legendary Living Doll singer.

Jeffrey said: “I was amazed we brought the whole airport to a stop, absolutely and totally amazed.

“We were out bowling in Portugal having a good time when on the way home we saw Sir Cliff in duty free. One of our members looks like him so thought it would be funny if he came with us.

“He came with us for a drink in the bar and when it was time to go I folded him up and walked him through. We got on the plane and I put him in the overhead locker. “Then the pilot came on and said there would be no further action if we gave it back.

“He shook my hand and said he’d never experienced anything as funny before and the stewardesses and stewards were laughing too.”

Jeffrey is hoping to get Cliff down to the bowls club one day. He added: “We want to make him an honorary member.

“It was all good fun, everyone took it in the spirit it was intended.”

A spokesman for Sir Cliff said the star is travelling and unavailable for comment.
