Hend product our only goal

- ■ by DAVID MADDOCK

JORDAN HHenderson d has hit back at the critics who question his role in Liverpool’s midfield.

With Alex OxladeChamberlain scoring twice against Genk in the last round of Champions League games, there were calls to change the established order.

But Henderson, 29, responded with a vital equaliser on Sunday in the 2-1 win over Tottenham – his first goal at Anfield since December 2015.

And he stressed that people have to understand what is required of a Jurgen Klopp midfielder.

He said: “As long as we win games, the midfielders can contribute in other ways. It’s not always goals.

“Now and again it’s nice to get on the scoresheet, but for us it’s mainly about performance.

“It’s about working together as a team and it doesn’t matter who scores.”

So even though his goal must have tasted sweet in the face of such criticism, for Henderson it simply doesn’t matter.

He added: “People will analyse and say we want more goals from midfield but ultimately if the forwards score the goals, then what does it matter?

“I don’t really care who scores goals as long as we win.

“We have got a lot of good midfielders, different players who can do different things.

“That’s good for the manager because it’ll depend on certain games and certain teams that we’re playing and who fits that particular game.

“But I feel as though we’re all performing to a high level and pushing each other.

“Ultimately we all want the same thing – to be successful and to help each other.

“So it’s good for everyone to keep playing the way they have been.”
