WARD SAVES FACE AFTER SLIP-UP

- ■ by DAVE ARMITAGE

DANNY WARD went from zero to hero to help book Leicester’s place in the quarter-finals.

The back-up Foxes keeper defied the brave Brewers with an outstanding flying stop to keep out Scott Fraser’s 75th-minute stinger.

The Welshman had earlier made a mistake when he could only help Liam Boyce’s 52nd-minute shot into the far corner of his net.

It might have been a different story but for that Fraser save – and sub James Maddison finished off Burton with a last-minute goal just six minutes after coming on.

Brendan Rodgers’ men were given

a few scares after getting down to business quickly.

They were in front after just seven minutes when they sliced the League One side apart with a quick exchange of passes which ended with Youri Tielemans unselfishly picking out Kelechi Iheanacho to score an easy chance.

The visiting supporters lapped it up, chanting ‘We want 10!’ with Friday’s 9-0 away hammering of Southampton still fresh in the mind.

It was clear early on that the Foxes were just that yard quicker in both speed and thought.

Tielemans doubled the lead in the 20th minute, smashing the ball in from close range after Dennis Praet had the freedom of the left flank.

But if there were any thoughts the Premier League side might go on a goal spree, Burton had other ideas and gave then a couple of scares right on the stroke of half-time.

Nathan Broadhead forced Ward to make a smart save to keep out his diving header and then warmed the keeper’s fingers again with a first time shot.
