LABOUR OF GLOVE

Kasper is keeping Danny on his toes

LEICESTER goalkeeper Danny Ward says there’s a ghost called Kasper making sure he always plays to the max.

Ward has played a massive part in getting the Foxes to the Carabao Cup last eight but admits he’s not been given any guarantees that he’ll stay on the Wembley trail.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are fancied to go all the way this time and Ward certainly played his part in the 3-1 victory at Burton.

He made a handful of crucial stops, but revealed that Rodgers has not told him that the cup gig is his alone.

The 26-year-old, a £12m buy from Liverpool, has found it impossible to dislodge Kasper Schmeichel from the No.1 spot since his move the summer before last.

Ward said: “Nothing is set in stone in football. The manager picks his team however he sees fit.

“It has nothing to do with me. What we do is train hard as a group, push each other hard in training every day – goalkeepers included. Then we know, whoever is picked is working at a good level and ready to perform at a good level.

“Of course it’s difficult. Everyone wants to play. Goalkeepers are in a specialised position and Kasper has been absolutely brilliant for this club for a very long time.

“For myself and the other keepers, we just have to keep working hard and pushing Kasper all the way.”

He added: “Ultimately we all want the best goalkeeper to be out there at the right time. So we are all pushing each other and pushing each other in training.”

Ward firmly believes Leicester are driven to try to give the fans a Wembley day out to remember.

He said: “We want to be successful. We want to have something to show for our efforts.

“In years to come you want people to look back on this team with affection and say they achieved something special and had something at the end to show for it.

“We’ve got a hungry changing room and we want to be successful, no matter what the competition is. As long as we keep ourselves going, hopefully we’ll have a good run this year.”
