HAT’S RACIST!

Sombreros banned from fancy dress parties

- ■ by ANTONY THROWER

SOMBREROS have been banned at a university because wearing one could be considered racist.

Students who put on Mexican fancy dress for nights out at the University of Sheffield have been told they will be challenged by security guards.

But one student in the city who is Mexican said: “I can legit say f*** this s***.”

A SNOWFLAKE student union caused an uproar by banning sombreros, because wearing one could be seen as racist.

The University of Sheffield has outlawed anything that could be deemed to mock someone’s race, religion, culture or disability.

So students dressed in the wide-brimmed Mexican hats over Halloween have been warned they will be challenged by security.

But student Alex Garcia wrote on Facebook: “As a Mexican I can legit say f*** this s***.” And Memo Maldonado agreed, adding: “Same. We actually love seeing ppl with em [sombreros].”

Another student asked: “Will leprechaun hats [be banned] on St Patrick’s Day?”

Sombreros really became popular during the 1986 World Cup in Mexico thanks to the mascot Pique.

But posters put up around Sheffield University advertising the guidelines show a picture of the hat along with the slogan: “My culture is not your costume.”

The student union women’s officer Rosa Tully said of the ban: “We have produced these posters reminding you this Halloween to consider whether your costume mocks or demeans another person’s race, culture or disability.” The university’s tough stance follows advice from the National Union of Students, which is challenging insulting costumes. They said: “This Halloween we want everyone to double check their costume to avoid the exploitation of others.” In 2013 a sports team dressed as Mexicans were denied entry to a Halloween party at Birmingham University because of their outfits. And in 2015 a restaurant in Norwich gave sombreros to students at University of East Anglia but the union took them away to prevent anyone becoming offended.

IT’S enough to make you choke on your burrito.

Sheffield University has banned people dressing up in sombreros because snowflakes think it offends Mexicans.

This is the same sombrero that is loved by Mexicans.

The one that was worn by mascot

Pique at the 1986 World Cup.

The one that mariachi bands from Mexico wear in Mexico.

A symbol of the country that the people are proud of.

However, despite Mexicans saying it isn’t a problem to wear one, smarty-pants students say it is culturally offensive.

They want to make it a sin to dress in anything that comes from a foreign country or another part of the UK.

No more kilts at weddings in case the Scots get upset. No cowboy hats in case someone from Texas gets offended.

And you’d better not wear a dressing gown in case the Japanese are put out.

Sooner or later these idiots will run out of things to get offended about.

Then they will really have nothing to do with their time.
