Floods death warning

Evacuation as rain hits once again

WARNINGS of deadly floods remained in place in Yorkshire last night with residents urged to leave before getting cut off.

Homes and businesses have been devastated by debris-filled sewage water after “biblical” rainfall in the village of Fishlake, near Doncaster.

Rescue crews have been drafted in from across the country to help get people out of their homes.

And an RAF Chinook helicopter has been shoring up flood defences.

But as some residents chose to stay put, Doncaster Council warned it would not be able to help them, with more rain forecast.

Chief executive Damian Allen said: “We are concerned over reports some residents remain in the area.

“Fire and Rescue crews are on hand to evacuate residents who may be stuck and we would urge everybody to take advantage of this.

“The council are unable to offer on-the-ground support to residents in severe flood-warning areas, on advice from the Environment Agency.”

The Agency has 44 flood warnings in place across the UK.

There are five “severe” warnings on the River Don in South Yorks, meaning a significant threat to life, with less serious “yellow” warnings in parts of the East Midlands.

A spokesman confirmed at least 400 houses had been flooded and over 1,600 people told to evacuate.

But police quashed rumours of looting after a clip shot by local Michael Hearne in Bolton-UponDearne showed cars with windows smashed and doors wrenched open.

He said: “Unbelievable what level people drop to.”

Meanwhile, in Matlock, Derbys, PM Boris Johnson was filmed trying to mop up a Specsavers opticians.

The video of him sploshing muddy water around led some to ask if he had ever mopped a floor before.
