DREAMING OF A WOKE CHRISTMAS Killjoy star Emma says ban festive gifts

- by ADELA WHITTINGHAM

NOT so festive flakes led by actor Dame Emma Thompson are demanding people rent Christmas trees, scrap tinsel, wrap presents in scarves – or simply ban them altogether – for a

save-the-planet sustainable Christmas.

Campaigners from Wrap, a plastic waste reduction charity, suggest using ivy, fir cones, mistletoe and holly for decorations rather than tinsel.

Environmental charities suggest using scarves as wrappings with Christmas cards sent over email.

Dame Emma Thompson is planning a Christmas without gifts.

She said: “This year we’re going to have a sustainable Christmas – no gifts… because we’ve got everything, because some of us do have way too much.”

Friends Of The Earth say renting a spruce has a smaller environmental impact than buying one, as garden centres can ensure it carries on growing.

Alastair and Diane Lucking run Galvaston Farm in Leicestershire which offers Christmas tree rentals and picks them up in January to be planted again.

The couple said: “Our sales have already doubled this year.”

WE’VE been waiting for snowflakes at Christmas time for a while now. But this is not what we had in mind. The “woke” folk want us to ditch wrapping paper, cards and in some cases presents. And anyone who gets their own tree will be put on the naughty list as well. For many people Christmas – and all the traditions that go with it – is a time when they can get together with their families and forget about life’s worries. A Christmas card is a way of keeping in touch if you’re not part of the social media generation. It’s easy for millionaire Dame Emma Thompson to say she doesn’t want presents. For those less fortunate it’s the one time of year they may get a treat. We all know we need to do our bit to help the planet. And it makes sense to try not to waste food and recycle materials that can be recycled.

But don’t let the moaners ruin Christmas.
