Even when the cameras he’ll be on stand-by.

He said: “I am on call on Christmas Day this year, actually. I have done the last few years.

“Animals don’t know it’s Christmas so if a cow needs to be calved then it doesn’t matter to the cow if it’s Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.

“The good thing is if you do get called out you usually get a glass of sherry or a mince pie at the farm, so it is quite nice sometimes to have that bit of Christmassy goodwill.

“The first ever one I got called to was a calf that was poorly early in the day, at about 6.30am. I was lucky enough to see the sun rise on Christmas Day, which was beautiful.

“Another year I calved a cow. It was in the middle of the night and it was about 5am when I got back and cleaned up.

“I’ve done some things in my career and thought: ‘Oh my God I shouldn’t have done that’. But you never know who’s watching.”
