Hot TV CHOICE

- With Mike Ward

So for the second year running we’ve got an all-woman final of THE APPRENTICE (9pm, BBC One). Just one more task and either Scarlett or Carina will be crowned Lord Sugar’s new business buddy.

The tension is almost unbearable, and yet somehow not quite.

Before it gets underway, Lord S talks us through each sacking he’s made so far in THE APPRENTICE: WHY I FIRED THEM (8pm, BBC One), a task which surprisingly he manages to stretch out for a full hour. (Me, I’d have just gone: “Why the hell do you THINK I fired them? Because they’re a bunch of plonkers, obviously. Durr…”)

Then afterwards he’ll rock up on THE APPRENTICE: YOU’RE HIRED (10pm, BBC One), along with his champ and runner-up, so host Tom Allen can ask him to explain his decision, not that it’s any of Tom’s damn business.

For the concluding task itself, Scarlett and Carina must each go ahead and launch the business for which they’re expecting Lord Sugar to cough up £250,000. That means creating a brand, a digital billboard and one of those ropey TV ads, then pitching before Lord S and a roomful of suits. A daunting challenge, then – made even dauntinger by the fact that, as is customary, they’ll each have a bunch of previously fired candidates back to ‘help’ them.

Elsewhere, in the last bit of THE BABY HAS LANDED (9pm, BBC Two), Surrey pair Nigel and Helen christen new arrival Abigail, their fifth child. So will they stick to their vow to call it a day now, baby-making-wise?

I wouldn’t bank on it.
