Soggy Brits face Xmas washouts

- by JACK ANDREWS jack.andrews@dailystar.co.uk

A WET Christmas is on the way with half the country under water.

Severe weather has wrecked getaway plans as authorities issue 91 flood warnings.

Travel misery is expected with 6.2million people battling to get home for the holidays in long delays on drenched roads.

Thousands of passengers are also facing rail chaos in the next few days.

Bookies Coral make it odds on at 4-5 this December being the wettest since records began.

Villages have been left submerged after non-stop rain.

Swelled

Warnings are in place for the Midlands, south, south-west and south-east with a further 237 flood alerts, meaning possible flooding, for the same areas and in the north.

A rising tide of muddy water got close to the front door of Frogmore Cottage, home to Harry and Meghan in Windsor, while they are on holiday in Canada.

The nearby River Thames swelled threatening the house just months after £3million of taxpayers’ money was spent having it renovated.

In Yalding, Kent, a caravan park had to be evacuated yesterday after the River Medway burst its banks.

Homes and gardens were also damaged when a tornado hit Surrey on Saturday.

There was severe flooding in East Sussex with cars swept away by the water.

Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead said: “We have had an exceptionally wet December and there’s every chance the festive period turns into a bit of a washout.

“We now make it odds on that this month breaks the record and goes down as the wettest ever.”
