History making is extra-ordinary for Joe

JOE GOMEZ reckons Liverpool’s Club World Cup win will only get better with age. And the defender believes the Reds’ experience of being winners ensured they held their nerve to see off Flamengo.

Gomez (left) could not hide his delight as the Reds won the competition for the first time thanks to Roberto Firmino’s extra-time winner.

Liverpool join Manchester

United, who lifted the trophy in 2008, as the only English teams to win the prize.

But the tournament looks set to grow in importance over the years, with plans to expand it even further by adding more teams from across the continents.

When asked if this will be something better to look back on as time goes by, Gomez said: “I think so.

“How do you get here? You do it by winning one of the biggest trophies in world football. Not too many people have this opportunity, so why not celebrate it?

“The supporters are here. They are celebrating, so will we. We were not coming here to have fun. We came here with ambition. We have now come away as world champions.”

Gomez played a key role alongside Virgil van Dijk after playing just a minute of last season’s Champions League Final because injury hindered the second half of his season. He added: “On a personal note, I am just grateful. I have had my periods of not being involved in things like this.

“I just want to savour every moment. It’s a blessing to be a part of this club. I think in future I am going to look back and think, ‘That was a really special team to be a part of’.”
