OLE KEEPS FAITH AFTER DE SASTER

- ■ by DARREN LEWIS

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER refused to criticise David De Gea for the gaffe that gifted Watford their first home win for nine months.

The Manchester United keeper let Ismaila Sarr’s second-half shot slip through his hands for the first goal.

But Solskjaer said: “It was just a ball that slipped through his hands. A routine mistake. He might have been thinking about where he was going to go from there.

“One of the things we’ve been thinking of looking to do is think

about the next move when he gets the ball. But you can’t be angry with players making mistakes. It is part of life and part of football.”

Watford joined Crystal Palace, West Ham, Newcastle and Bournemouth in beating the

Reds while near the foot of the table.

(inset) said: “We have to be better against these so-called lower opposition sides who have a deep block.”

Maguire also sympathised with Jesse Lingard, who missed when clean through. “He knows he has to score,” said the

centre-back. “That was a big chance in the game. The first goal is crucial. He has missed it, we move on.”

Asked why his men had been so poor after four wins out of five, Solskjaer added: “There are different reasons for the outcome of a game of football.

“You create chances, you don’t score goals. We created loads of chances but only after they were 2-0 up. We’ve got to start with more urgency.”

Hornets boss Nigel Pearson, who saw his men go within six points of safety, said: “We are in a difficult situation but I believe we can get out of it. I thought the players committed to the game exceptionally well.”
