DECLAN RICE remembers receiving the hairdryer treatment from David Moyes during the Scot’s first spell in charge at West Ham.

But the England midfielder insists he passed the test and learned a big lesson and is now relishing more straight talking from the returning boss.

Moyes, overlooked in favour of Manuel Pellegrini for the permanent job in 2018 after steering the club to 13th, saw his second coming get off to a barnstorming start on Wednesday.

West Ham romped to their biggest Premier League win for 12 years with a 4-0 mauling of

Bournemouth with Rice catching the eye alongside two-goal Mark Noble in the engine room.

Now Rice is preparing for the tough love the squad can expect from Moyes.

Recalling an incident during a 4-1 loss to Arsenal in April 2018, Rice said: “He was on my case for a mistake when I ducked for the ball, missed a header and the ball went in.

“It was 1-1 at the time and I got out of the way of the ball and afterwards he came for me in the changing room.

“I was only young then, but it was rightly deserved. If I am old enough to play in the team then

I am old enough to take it. That is the same now even though I am still 20.

“If he gives me criticism you have got to take it on the chin. He is only doing it because he wants to help. I think that is the way forward and what we are all looking forward to.

“It was the hairdryer treatment but I took it well and I think he wanted to see how I reacted to it.

“I did go on to play every game for the rest of the season.

“I took it on the chin, kept working hard, kept working on my heading that season and luckily enough that mistake didn’t happen again. That

TODD CANTWELL believes rock-bottom Norwich can still pull off a miracle – just as they did last season.

The Canaries are seven points off safety following Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

Midfielder Cantwell, 21, fired Daniel Farke’s men in front but Connor Wickham levelled.

Wins for Southampton, Watford, Aston Villa and West Ham have made Norwich’s task even harder. But Cantwell (right) said no-one backed the straight talking is what you need to be honest – look at what Nigel Pearson has done at Watford since he has come in.

“That is what Moyes is like. He’s old school but I think we needed that, we were getting too sloppy.”

Moyes has made it clear what he expects with Rice, insisting there’s too much talent in the West Ham squad to be battling against relegation.

He added: “If you look at the players, we shouldn’t be down there. And the manager gets the best out of the players.

“One thing he said was if you don’t run enough or work hard enough, you don’t play.”

Canaries to return to the Premier League in the first place.

He said: “There is a determination in the changing room.

“We made a miracle happen last year and everyone said there was no way we were going to win the league.

“I don’t believe it is all over and I don’t think anyone in the changing room does.”
