ELLIS: WE’RE BETTER THAN BOYS

- ■ by ROBIN COTTLE robin.cottle@dailystar.co.uk

GIRLS are much better at fighting than boys, according to a female gypsy boxing star.

Fierce Ellis Hopkins, 19, is set to became the first woman traveller to turn professional.

She marks her pro debut next month and claimed that females are better because “they learn faster”.

She said: “Boys don’t listen to coaches because they all think they know how to fight already.

“Girls listen and, technically, they become good quicker. At the top level it’s completely different, but starting off, girls pick up boxing a lot quicker than boys.”

Ellis, from Leicester, is trained by her dad Elvis, which she claimed has made her work harder to make the grade.

She said: “Dad has a gym full of fighters and he pushes me harder than he pushes anyone else.

“But he never made me box. Dad always said, ‘If you don’t want to box, you don’t have to.’

“But it was always me saying, ‘Come on dad, let’s go to the gym.’”

Ellis, who has been snapped in the gym with British boxing legends

including former light welterweight champ Ricky Hatton and current heavyweight contender Tyson Fury, has enjoyed a successful amateur career.

But she said her dream is to be world champion rather than go to the Olympics, which is why she has decided to turn pro. And the brawler added that she is ready to excite fans who come out to watch her on her professional debut.

She said: “They want to see fighters who stand and trade blows from first bell to last.

“They want to see blood – and won’t be mine they see!” it
