own side’s game to watch the new star of the Super League show.

His first contribution was to knock on and then, following a powerful burst, his third contribution was to knock on again.

The main man looked more like Sonny Spill Williams and afterwards Wolfpack coach Brian McDermott said: “I’m not interested in summarising his performance.

‘‘He got the big cheer when he dropped the ball. You always get a nice welcome in West Yorkshire.”

Having been out of league for five years, Williams had stressed he might be a bit rusty. No kidding mate.

A cold afternoon in Yorkshire was a world away from his last action on a rugby pitch, as a late substitute in the Kiwis’ World Cup semi-final defeat by England in Japan.

His new side were losing 10-4 when he joined the party.

But within 10 minutes of coming on the deficit had grown to 22-4. That soon became 28-4 and Williams was spending a lot of time stood underneath his own posts watching replays of the horror show on the big screen.

All the kicks and flicks came to nothing and, when Hakim Miloudi scored a consolation try for the Wolfpack, Williams wasn’t even in the same half and in no mood to celebrate with his new team-mates.

“It didn’t quite go to plan but it’s a game of footy – you win some, you lose some,” said Williams. “I’m just glad I got back out there and got a taste of it.

“I’ve got a good base to work from. We got outmuscled through the middle and then it was an uphill battle. We will go back to the drawing board, work hard and learn from it.”
