OH RO! IT’S SHREWS OWN GOAL WOE

But Kop kids make it joy for Klopp

-

had Shrewsbury pinned back in front of a full house at Anfield.

Neco Williams had the first real chance when he fizzed a shot just wide in the 34th minute.

It was the promising full-back Williams who had the next opportunity too after the break when he fired over the bar.

Harvey Elliott, the youngest player on the pitch at 16, then set up Williams for another chance but this time Shrewsbury keeper Max O’Leary turned away his low with his feet.

The youngsters’ brave attempt looked to have hit a bump when Shaun Whalley found the net just before the hour mark.

Whalley had pounced when David Edwards’ strike was saved by Kop keeper

Caoimhin Kelleher but substitute Daniel Udoh was offside in the build-up and VAR correctly ruled it out.

The 8,000 visiting fans had been celebrating wildly – being a League One club means they have not had to endure VAR before this. But this time the controversial new system got the decision spot on to leave it level.

Udoh instilled some life into the Shrews when he was introduced and he fired just wide soon after the chalked off goal.

Elliott should have put the Reds in front seconds later at the other end but hesitated at the crucial moment.

Williams had tried so hard to score but in the end he had to settle for an assist. It was his long ball to Elliott which was intercepted by Ro-Shaun Williams, only for the Shrewsbury defender to head into his own keeper.

As the minutes ticked away, the young Liverpool side were almost past their bedtime but they were not caught napping and instead held on for a famous victory, with Shrewsbury seeming to have the wind taken out of their sails by the goal ruled out by VAR.
