Farmageddon! VEGETARIAN CAMPAIGN IS BLASTED
■
FUMING farmers have slammed a cancer charity for demanding we go meat free for another month – just weeks after Veganuary. Macmillan Cancer Support wants people to give up their burgers, sausages and bacon for Meat-Free March. Wiltshire dairy farmer Jonathan Cook said it could be devastating as it unwittingly suggests a link between meat and cancer. He said: “Whether intended or not, people will associate the two. “I am appalled they have become embroiled in a misguided vegan agenda based on lies.” Charity slogans include “bye-bye for now burgers” and “so long to the sausage”.
Chiefs suggest serving up meatless meatballs or lentil bolognese.
John Davies, the president of National Farmers’ Union Cymru, said his members were dismayed.
He said: “Many family farmers do a great deal of fundraising for Macmillan. They can’t understand why they are siding with this anti-meat initiative.
“We certainly don’t want to undermine the fantastic work
Macmillan does, but this has not been thought through.”
Rachel Murphy, of Macmillan, said it was a challenge instead of suggesting meat had a link to the disease. She added: “We’re very sorry this campaign has upset some of our supporters.”
Meanwhile, butcher Tom Samways, 36, got so fed up of vegans naming food after meat he is selling “carrots” made of pork in Cardigan, west Wales. ★
