GUM AND DUMBER

Cop biter spared jail as he had no teeth

- ■ by JERRY LAWTON

A YOB who bit a police officer dodged a prison term because he didn’t have his false teeth in.

Wojciech Samp was spared being locked up despite it being his fourth attack on a cop.

A THUG bit a cop while being led to a cell – but avoided jail because he did not have any teeth.

Wojciech Samp, 35, had his dentures out yet still decided to sink his gums into the police officer’s wrist.

The cop escaped unscathed and a judge said the fact the bite did not cause any injury stopped him sending Samp straight to jail.

Sheriff William Summers said: “If it had I would have unhesitatingly imposed a lengthy custodial sentence.

“Officers should be able to go about their business without being subject to that sort of abuse.’’

It was Samp’s fourth attack on a police officer in the past four years.

The judge said he had given “careful and anxious” consideration to his fate over what were serious charges.

Samp had been arrested after threatening to torch a six-storey temporary housing block that had a council worker inside.

Officers attended, arrested him and took him to the Kittybrewster custody suite in

Aberdeen. Lynzi Souter, prosecuting, told Aberdeen Sheriff Court: “When there he threw his head towards an officer in an attempt to headbutt him.

“Some time later, while at the charge bar, the accused’s behaviour meant he was being taken to a cell.

“While being taken to a cell he bit the officer on the wrist. No injury was caused.’’

Andrew Ormiston said in mitigation that Samp, whose address was given as care of his solicitor’s office, had no recollection of the bite, but added: “He wears dentures. At that point he didn’t think he had his dentures in.’’

The lawyer added: “It’s clear that Mr Samp has, in the past, had difficulties with alcohol consumption.’’

Samp admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner and assaulting a police officer. He was handed an 18-month supervision order and told to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work.

A police source said: “It may have turned out to have been more of a suck than a bite, but it was nasty either way. The thought of it really turns your stomach.’’
