22SELF SCHOOL heads are being urged to stage selfdefenc­e lessons for pupils after a campaign by pals of a murdered teenager.

Ellie Gould, 17, was killed last May by boyfriend Thomas Griffiths, 18, who knifed her 13 times in the neck.

Her three best friends, Tilda Offen, Ellie Welling and Harriett Adams, demanded compulsory training in schools. Conservati­ve MP James Gray backed them and debated it in Parliament.

Education minister Vicky Ford said: “We will work with the Associatio­n for PE, Sport England, and the sector to make sure new, clear guidance is available to schools on how to make safe and effective provision.”

She said schools needed to consider pupils’ “age and maturity” so they understood selfdefenc­e could be used only in an emergency.

Griffiths was jailed in November for a minimum of 12 years and six months for the “frenzied attack”.
