Swan a Brit of all right

- ■ by NEIL MCLEMAN

KATIE SWAN and her family are bringing banoffee pie and British charity to the heart of the USA during the coronavirus crisis.

The tennis star’s mum Nicki, who was a trustee of the Willow Foundation founded by Bob and Megs Wilson, of which Katie is now an ambassador, has carried out voluntary work in their adopted home in Wichita, Kansas.

And now the whole family has been recruited to deliver supplies – and raise spirits.

The British No.6 (right), who is based in the USA because dad Richard is in the oil industry, said: “My mum works with a charity called ‘Big Brothers Big Sisters.’

“They help look after kids from a tough background or families which struggle financially.

“My parents have been going to Costco every morning, filling up the trolleys, buying everything in bulk for other people.

“They have supported a family of 15 who all live in one house. She has supported a 98-year-old man who cannot go to the grocery store.

“He loves my mum’s banoffee pie. It’s apparently the only thing he will eat.”

While brother Luke has joined his friends in making deliveries, the Fed Cup star works at HQ.

Swan added: “I have been helping her organise the care packages.

“Mum said she likes me to help out at the house. She has been amazing.”

Now, like the rest of tennis, she is waiting to see if Wimbledon will be cancelled next week.

“Nobody can predict that,” said Swan, 21, who reached the second round in 2018.

“Hopefully Wimbledon has a chance.”
