Play EVERY game and you’ll leave stars on their knees

- By PAUL BROWN

THIS season is heading towards a write-off and if not for Liverpool it would have been cancelled already.

The Premier League will have to sit down and have another rethink because I don’t see how they are going to finish all the games they have left.

The delay is going to drag and drag and if we come back at all it will only be to play two or three games more before they call it off. At least then you would give Liverpool a chance to clinch the title and give the other teams a chance to stay up.

Three more games for the teams at the bottom is enough of a chance, so long as everyone plays the same amount of games.

At the moment Aston Villa have a game in hand and move out of the bottom three if they win it. It’s unfair on them to end the season now. If Liverpool weren’t 25 points clear, the season would have been called off by now. They would have said, ‘See you in August.’

I don’t want it to be scrapped because I want Liverpool to win the league. They’ve been waiting 30 years.

You could just give them the title but it’s not the same. I can see why they’re all desperate to finish the season but you have to ask how realistic that is.

How late can you push back the start of the next one? How much of a rest do the players get in between?

Stars like Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson, who will be key figures for

England in the Euros next summer, risk major burnout.

It’s just too much football.

The fairest way to finish would be to try and come back for two or three more games. They would be absolute cup finals for the teams who have something left to play for.

Give Liverpool a chance to win the title, give the teams at the bottom a chance to stay up and the teams chasing the Champions League an opportunity to clinch it.

Find a way to make sure everybody has played the same number of games and then stop. Otherwise it could be months before it’s over and next season becomes a big problem. Right now, I think it only takes one of the major leagues to say, ‘No, that’s it’ and it will all be over.

If we get to that point the major leagues will fall like dominos – everyone would follow suit.

It’s a massive shame because football can help at times of crisis like this. Lots of people live for it.

It could help the country if it comes back but football can’t restart until it’s safe, even behind closed doors.

Realistically you can’t see any way of them getting a full season finished by June 30. Two or three games and it could be over.
