Atrocity fears as fanatic is freed

A Far-right extremist who converted to Islam in jail is set to be freed today despite fears he could commit a terror atrocity.

The convict – who befriended Streatham knifeman Sudesh Amman in prison – was due to be released automatica­lly in March after serving half his sentence.

Justice Secretary Robert Buckland obtained a court order to keep him inside.

But it is believed he will be released today because the Government has no further powers to detain him.

The man, who can only be known as X, will go onto a community rehabilita­tion programme.

Sources said he would be subjected to “bespoke monitoring arrangemen­ts” with security services watching him round the clock.

New laws were passed to end the automatic early release of terrorists after atrocities in Streatham, south London, and at Fishmonger­s’ Hall, near London Bridge.

But they do not apply in this case because X was detained under an old law.

At X’s hearing in March prison officials told Westminste­r magistrate­s they had received intelligen­ce that the inmate posed a “high risk to the public”.
