CALLUM’S TIPS FOR A TOP BOD

- ■ by JAMES MOORE

LOVE Island fans should have been getting ready for a new series while eager contestants would normally be preparing to head to the Majorca villa.

But sadly this summer’s show has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

So to give followers their fix, the Daily Star caught up with ex-islander Callum Jones from this year’s winter show.

And the former scaffolder reveals his own brush with Covid-19, believing he was struck down by the illness.

Callum explains: “I was in bed for three days and had fatigue and a cough, then I was unwell for another week.

“It was a bit worrying – you panic a little bit. I’ll never know if it was coronavirus for sure.

“Of course you can speculate. I didn’t have a test. It could have been the flu, but my immune system is pretty strong.”

His partner from the show, Molly Smith, didn’t fall ill, despite the pair being holed up together for lockdown in their Manchester home.

He adds: “Thankfully just me who got sick, didn’t get it.”

But his possible brush with the virus hasn’t stopped Callum from working on maintaining the toned physique he showed off in South Africa back in January. The fitness fanatic it was Molly explains: “Normally I would go to the gym five times a week for about an hour and a half, and do boxing two or three times a week.

“In lockdown I’ve been sticking to home workouts. I’ve done a couple of Joe Wicks and Insanity workouts. There are thousands out there online.”

Callum, 23, and Molly, 26, have also joined forces to exercise together.

He says: “We do workouts together in our big kitchen.

“She’s crazy for it, doing two or three workouts a day. I stick to the one! We’ve been out and done some sprints too, so we are keeping fit. You’ve got to keep things ticking over.”

Callum believes being into fitness since he was a youngster means he does not find it a chore.

He adds: “I’ve always kept myself fit. I have done it since I was about 11 or 12.

“It makes me feel miles better.

“I have been really missing the gym and I do not have a punchbag at home so I’ve not been able to do my boxing.”

A keen boxer for a decade, Callum says the training, along with his job, was part of the regime that wowed fans on Love Island. He says: “I did some pad work before I went into Love Island but mainly concentrated on weights.” Callum is a keen cook, who also enjoys baking cakes.

His typical daily diet is a breakfast such as scrambled eggs and beans, tuna pasta for lunch and perhaps chicken and noodles for dinner. He adds: “My signature dishes are probably Thai, a pad thai is my favourite.

“I always have cucumber, spinach, eggs and beans in my fridge. But I hate smoked salmon.” And he does enjoy the odd guilty pleasure, admitting: “I include biscuits, chocolate, pizza and red wine. She says: “I don’t really watch what I eat, I’m lucky. But I try to make healthy choices whenever I can.”

■ do love a greasy burger or a pizza. Before this, Wagamama was my favourite.

“We’ve been ordering the odd takeaway in lockdown such as chicken katsu burger and chips.

“But I try to stick to only eating fast food once a week – everything in moderation! “I try not to eat too many high fatty foods and I do follow a strict diet before a holiday in the summer.” Callum is also careful when it comes to how much booze he drinks.

He says: “On a weekend I’ll have a vodka and lime soda.”

So what tips does he have for the rest of us when it comes to working out?

He says: “Consistency is key. My advice is to keep active and stick at it.

“Not eating any rubbish, sticking to good carbs and lots of vegetables is key.

“Exercise is good mental health.

“I go for a gym session and it definitely makes me feel better.”

And Callum is feeling positive despite having been trapped indoors for weeks.

He adds: “Thankfully I’ve never had any mental health problems and we are keeping in good spirits!” for your
