Rapper’s appeal over drug death
A RAPPER is appealing against his conviction for the manslaughter of Holby City actor John Michie’s daughter, Louella Fletcher-michie.
Ceon Broughton, 31, filmed Louella instead of getting help as she died from an overdose of drug 2C-P, which he gave to her at the Bestival music festival in 2017.
Broughton continued to capture footage of her bad trip on his mobile phone for up to six hours. Three images he took showed her dead.
Louella, 25, was the first person ever known to have died of a 2C-P overdose.
But Broughton may have been powerless to save her, his lawyers said yesterday.
Fatal
At his trial Broughton had denied giving Louella the fatal drug, adding he thought she would recover.
He was convicted of gross negligence manslaughter and jailed for eight-and-a-half-years.
Last night three Court Of Appeal judges were considering whether to overturn that decision.
Lawyers for Broughton argued he was wrongly convicted and given an excessive sentence.
Prosecutors said the appeal should be dismissed.
They said Broughton had failed to take “reasonable” steps to seek help for his girlfriend because he had received a suspended jail term a month earlier and feared the consequences.
But Stephen Kamlish QC, for Broughton, said jurors could not have been sure Louella would have lived, even if she had received medical care. He told the hearing she might have taken an overdose which was “not survivable”.
He said the jury had to be sure any “breach of duty” by Broughton was a “substantial” cause of death.
