Brits all set for holidays and boozing
BRITAIN got a triple dose of good news yesterday in the fight against coronavirus.
Pub beer gardens could open within a fortnight, travel firms are offering cheap holidays, while daily deaths dropped to the lowest figure – 55 – in months.
Paul Charles, who runs a travel consultancy, said: “The key for the industry in the short term is restoring consumer confidence and getting people to book.
“Airlines will be looking to pumpprime the market, which will result in a flood of cheap seats.”
Travel firms are seeking to lure holidaymakers abroad with cheap package deals and airline seats. Experts say they are slashing prices by up to two-thirds.
And plans are reportedly being drawn up to reopen beer gardens on June 22.
Save
Breweries are getting ready to deliver 250million pints next week in a bid to boost the hospitality sector.
Ministers will discuss the plan today, according to reports.
The industry is hoping a group of ministers dubbed the “Save Summer Six”, led by Chancellor Rishi Sunak, can pile on the pressure to kickstart the economy.
Meanwhile, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “Today’s figure records 55 fatalities, the lowest number since March 21 before lockdown began.
“They also show that there were no deaths recorded in London hospitals, which is a real milestone for the capital.”
There were also zero new deaths in Scotland.
The coronavirus death toll reached 40,597, including the latest 55 fatalities. There were 1,205 confirmed new cases.
Mr Hancock added: “It is clear that coronavirus is in retreat across the country. But we must be vigilant.”
