Plea to Star readers in boozer fight

- By ROBIN COTTLE robin.cottle@dailystar.co.uk

THE pub industry is calling on Daily Star readers to help save the great British boozer.

Hundreds of thousands of jobs could be lost if they are not given a date to reopen today.

Bosses say landlords need at least three weeks’ notice to gear up before throwing their doors open again.

And Emma Mcclarkin, head of the British Beer and Pub Association, urged readers to get in pubs and enjoy a pint when they do reopen, adding: “Together we can save the great British pub.”

She promised boozers will be safe environments after the Covid-19 pandemic. And she said of Daily Star readers: “We want to thank the support customers have given us throughout this crisis by buying takeaway beers.

“We want to say to them: ‘Please do come back and support the pubs.’

“Of course it will be a new normal.

“Customers will be greeted at the door. There will probably be a one-way flow of customers. It will be table service.

“But we can find a way to get back to some sort of pub experience.”

A potential reopening date is July 4 but for that to happen businesses need to find out the Government’s plans today.

Ms Mcclarkin, 41, said: “If the industry doesn’t get the go-ahead there could be hundreds of thousands of job losses.”

She also called for the Government to relax its two-metre social distancing guidelines, saying it means only a third of boozers would be able to open.

If the advice was changed to one metre, 75% of them would qualify.
