LEICESTER star James Maddison hopes that the decision to push Euro 2020 back a year can help him secure a starting spot for England.

The midfielder was hoping to add to his single cap this summer but will now be trying to clinch a top-four spot with the Foxes. The 23-year-old admitted that when the Euros were initially called off he was left wondering what might have been. But now he thinks it could be a good thing. Maddison said: “It’s a tough one. There’s positives and negatives. “It’s mainly negatives in my head because anything that gets cancelled, you’re like, ‘No, I had a good chance, we’re third in the Premier League, I’ve been playing well this season.’

“You think it could be you miss out on.

“But if I think about it in the long run, I’ll be a year better off – a year of Champions League football, if we can secure that, a year older, a year more experienced. “And then I’ll be in an even better position next summer.

“It’s a long time away and a lot of things can change.” Maddison and his England team-mate Ben Chilwell believe Brendan something

Rodgers’ Foxes will be flying when their season swings back into action at Watford a week today.

The former Norwich midfielder thinks the players will benefit from the rigorous lockdown regime set out by the club.

Maddison said: “The sessions were absolutely horrible at first because you’re doing running and getting the fitness back into the legs.

“It’s almost been paused and it’s resuming like it has. It does have a weird feel to it, but the lads look really sharp.

“They’ve come back in such great condition, it’s brilliant to see how well they’ve kept themselves over the period.

“Some people can get lazy and not do so much when you don’t have to actually be here every day. But the lads are in tip-top condition and raring to go.”

Chilwell told LCFC TV: “We’re all looking pretty good. We did the fitness tests a few weeks ago and all our scores were really good, one of the best set of scores I’ve seen since I’ve been at the club, for everyone.

“So we’re really fit. It’s been months now since our last match so we’re all raring to go.

“We played a few practice games at the King Power Stadium. We’re all sharp and we’ve got a lot to play for

“Hopefully we’ll be ready.”
