HAMILTON IS BACKING BUBBA

- ■ by JACK STAPLEHURST

LEWIS HAMILTON has slammed the sick racists who left a noose in the garage of black Nascar driver Bubba Wallace.

The shameful act happened at the Talladega circuit in Alabama on Sunday.

And Hamilton, who has been outspoken on issues of race and attended a Black Lives Matter march in London on the same day, was quick to offer his support. The six-time Formula One world champion shared an earlier social media post by Wallace and added the message: “It’s disgusting that this is happening, stay safe and alert out there bro. Supporting from afar, proud of you.”

Wallace (left) is the only full-time African-american driver in the racing series and also threw his weight behind the BLM movement following the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.

He also campaigned successfully for the sport to ban the Confederate flag at its tracks.

But the noose discovery is a huge concern and Alabama-born Wallace, 26, posted on social media: “Together, our sport has made a real commitment to driving real change and championing a community that is accepting and welcoming of everyone. Nothing is more important and we will not be deterred by the reprehensible actions of those who seek to spread hate.

“As my mother told me today, ‘They are just trying to scare you’. This will not break me, I will not give in nor will I back down.

“I will continue to proudly stand for what I believe in.”

Wallace drives for stock car racing team Richard Petty Motorsports and was in action last night in the rain-delayed GEICO 500 at Talladega.

A plane had earlier flown above the track trailing the Confederate flag and a second banner that read, ‘DEFUND NASCAR’.
