JOHN GOSDEN remains upbeat regarding the rest of the campaign with Enable despite the mare suffering the third defeat of her career in Sunday’s Coral-eclipse at Sandown.

Now a six-year-old, a third Prix de l’arc de Triomphe victory remains Enable’s long-term target.

Gosden is more than satisfied with her after finishing second to Charlie Appleby’s Ghaiyyath over a trip that is now too short.

“She took it well, she had a good blow after the race,” said Gosden, above.

“You are never going to catch Ghaiyyath round Sandown over a mile and a quarter when he gets a nice easy lead. He’s a magnificent horse and a great galloper. To that extent we were delighted to finish second.

“If you are a stock man and work with animals, you get used to them and I could feel and see that her metabolism had changed as she’s got older.

“She’s finding it hard to get tight, the race will have helped, but you can’t keep trying to do it at home.”

Gosden believes 1000 Guineas and Oaks winner Love could become the major threat come the autumn, with Enable having to concede 7lb to her younger rival.

“You start taking on a filly like that giving them weight, you’ve got a whole new problem on your hands,” said Gosden. “I think the Oaks winner would have won the Derby. She’s the standout three-year-old.”
