THE SADDEST LITTLE DOG IN BRITAIN

HOW COULD THEY? Faithful pal dumped for ‘not learning to be good’

- ■ by ADELA WHITTINGHAM

BRITAIN’S saddest dog was tied up and abandoned outside kennels by his owner of 10 years because he had “not learned to be good”.

The elderly labrador, which was not microchipped, was discovered looking all forlorn along with a handwritten letter to explain

From Page 1 why it had been left tied up to the fence.

The pooch was left outside Jasmil Kennels and Cattery in Upchurch, Kent, on Monday morning with a handwritten letter that read: “Hello, pls can you take me in as my owner has abandoned me after 10 years because I have not learnt to be good, so I have been returned here where he found me.

“Thank you for looking after me, sorry for inconvenience.”

Officials have slammed the cruel owners.

A spokesman for Swale Council said: “Rehoming is the last option but this isn’t the way to do it”

The RSPCA is bracing itself for a surge in abandoned animals in the fallout of the Covid-19 crisis.

Since lockdown began the RSPCA has received reports of 3,492 dumped pets, including 1,509 dogs, 1,165 cats, 299 small furries – such as hamsters, guinea pigs and ferrets – and 275 exotic pets.

IT breaks your heart reading about the poor old abandoned dog. For most people, the pet pooch is a member of the family. You love them like your own flesh and blood. Sadly, though, there are always cases where they need to be re-homed. And it’s not always the owner’s fault. But there are right and wrong ways of doing things. To leave him tied to a fence with a note round his neck is unthinkable. If – as his old owner suggests – he was “too naughty” then the council should have been contacted. Instead, the poor old mutt was left in a humiliating and frightened state. After 10 years of loyalty, this is the last thing he deserved. Let’s hope his new owners treat him with more respect.
